Guanajuato: El Callejon Del Beso: Alley of the Kiss

Although this may seem like a dead end, this is the start to one of the most memorable love stories in Mexico. Legend has it, that this alley is where a young rich Spanish girl named Ana fell in love with a boy named Carlos who was happened to be a miner. Although both were very different and their families were enemies, Ana and Carlos fell in love. Both Ana and Carlos were not allowed to talk to each other, but as soon as the sun would set, and the stars and the moon would come out, Ana would creep out to her balcony where Carlos, from his window would be waiting. Ana and Carlos would spend nights talking and laughing silently, till one day Ana's father caught her. Just as Carlos confessed his love and kissed her, her father was awaiting her in her room. Her father was fusing with anger, that he threatened to kill her. Ana, who was very innocent, did not believe her father was capable of killing her. Ana and Carlos continued to met at night till one night her father caught her again. He was so infuriated, that he put a dager through her chest while Carlos held her hand one last time and kissed it.

The legend has that the couples that come across this alley have two possible consequences:

  • The first is to kiss your couple on the stairs of the alley and in return receive 7 years of happiness with your partner.
  • If you and your partner pass this alley and do not kiss in these stairs you will receive 7 years of bad luck in love.
In reality, this is  Mexico's love story. They are considered to be the Mexican "Romeo and Juliet."

Couples, young and old all throughout the city come to this alley to kiss and in a way ensure their love for each other. It is amazing to see how tourists from all around the world come and take part in the legend.

This is a definite must see site if you are traveling with a love one!
